Like every aspiring filmmaker and Star Wars fan, I wanted to make a Star Wars fan film. In 2019, while living in Okinawa, Japan, I set out to do that with Night Errant, a cyberpunk-noir-inspired short film.

I shot and edited the film myself, but its extensive visual effects quickly exceeded what my hardware could handle. So, with the help of some friends, I built my first PC and began teaching myself VFX as I worked through the film shot by shot. It took far longer than I ever expected, but along the way I was able to make a trailer inspired by the intro of the timeless Cowboy Bebop.

Before I could finish the film, I moved to New York City and went to film school. Film school led to full-time work, which led to graduate school, and in the blink of an eye, years passed. But Night Errant never stopped being special to me. It was my first short film, introduced me to some incredible friends, taught me how to edit, and gave me the foundation in visual effects that I’ve built on ever since.

Today, I’m a very different filmmaker than I was in 2019. After years of professional experience and formal training in both directing and cinematography, I can see just how much the original edit and post-production pipeline was, to be frank, a hot mess.

So I’ve recently dug out the old hard drives and started again. With a completely upgraded workstation (now the third PC I’ve built myself), I’m rebuilding Night Errant from the ground up with an entirely new editing and VFX pipeline, giving it the love, care, and attention it has always deserved.
